2016 World Footbag Championships – Recap – Results – Freestyle Finals Video Collection
Another historic milestone for footbag, as the World Championships take place in Slovakia for the very first time.
Trnava, Slovakia All the way across the world from my home in Montreal, Canada. I’ve traveled far to compete in Footbag Net and to document the final two days of the competition.
Day 1 featured the finals of the Freestyle Shred 30 event and the Circle Contest.
Day 2 brought an exciting lineup: the Women’s Circle Contest, Open Doubles Routines, Women’s Routines, and finally, the Open Routines finals.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the highlights and standout moments from these events.
Women: Singles Routines finals
The queen is back! Tina Aeberli from Switzerland reclaimed her title, making a triumphant return after missing the 2015 Championships. Unfortunately, last year’s champion, Paloma Mayo, suffered a knee injury in the earlier rounds, preventing her from delivering her best performance, and to challenge the greatest female freestyler of all time.
Also featured in the album are the routines of Lena Scheiwiller and Caroline Birch.
Open: Singles Routines finals
The Open Singles event faced a noticeable lack of depth this year due to the absence of several top players from 2015. The biggest disappointment, however, came from an ankle injury in the early rounds that dashed hopes for the return of another Czech prodigy. Unfortunately, Jindra Smola—winner of the 2014 (Paris) routines and runner-up in 2013 (Montreal)—was unable to compete.
On a brighter note, this opened up opportunities for other players to shine. Evan Gatesman claimed his first-ever Open Singles title, marking a significant milestone in his remarkable freestyle journey, by adding the only title missing from his collection. Legendary footbag freestyler Vasek Klouda earned second place with an impressive performance, even while battling a leg injury—he achieved the lowest drop count of the finals with only one. Third place was secured by Patrik Cerny, continuing the Czech Republic’s strong presence in the competition.
All the other finalists—Rafal Kaleta, Jakub Mosciszewski, Dominik Simku, Taishi Ishida, Arkadiusz Stanek, and Krystof Malér—are also featured in the album.
Open: Teams Routines finals
The team freestyle event saw the reigning champions return to the stage, ready to deliver yet another stellar performance. After claiming victories in 2014 (Paris) and 2015 (Copenhagen), the World Champions executed their routine with near-perfect precision. Tomas Tucek and Martin Sladek solidified their dominance in the discipline with an impressive threepeat.
In second place were Paloma Mayo and Sergio Garcia from Madrid, who faced significant challenges due to Paloma’s knee injury. Despite the pain, she persevered admirably. Third place went to the comedic duo Patrik Cerny and Dominik Simku, who entertained the audience with masks of the Champions. While their humor shone, their performance fell a little bit short of their true potential.
Open: Circle Contest finals
The 2015 Circle Contest in Copenhagen was truly spectacular, but this year saw a few top players absent. Evan Gatesman was the only one from last year’s top four to compete, and he delivered an outstanding performance to claim victory. Mariusz Wilk and Jakub Mosciszewski also had impressive runs, though Mikko Lepisto didn’t quite reach his usual level. The contest was split into two phases: Variety and Density, with a dedicated clip for each featured in the video collection.
Women Circle Contest finals
The Women’s Circle Contest went straight to the finals, featuring six contestants. However, this setup sometimes led to players unintentionally obstructing the performer, which is reflected in the documentation. Luckily, the area was clear during Tina Aeberli’s turns, allowing her performance to be captured well in the clip. Tina went on to secure the victory, followed by:
Hanna Mickiewicz, Jana Sassakova, Lena Scheiwiller, Caroline Birch, and Nina Stuppacher.
Open: Shred 30 Finals
I enjoy Shred 30 for its fast-paced intensity, where players take turns relentlessly as the raging techno music keeps pounding. Some pour their hearts into their performance, while others adopt a more technical or calculated approach. Alexander Trenner from Austria claimed victory over Taishi Ishida from Japan. The other competitors included Mariusz Wilk, Evan Gatesman, Dominik Simku, Patrik Cerny, Jakub Mosciszewski, Mikko Lepisto, and Krystof Malér. See for yourself!
